Although “Our Kinder Garden” is the smallest community mural I’ve ever done, it was one of the most meaningful and gratifying projects I’ve worked on. The artists: 190 kindergarten and pre-k students at Juan Cabrillo Elementary in Hawthorne, and many of their families. The subject: a garden of kindness. The mural was unveiled in early January of 2016 and the ceremony was attended by Margaret Lynch (Principal), Dr. Tom Johnstone (Superintendent) and several school board members. This is testament to the level of priority that the arts are given by the Wiseburn School District.
As with all of my community murals, the imagery came directly from the minds and hearts of the children, in this case five and six year old’s, and the results are innocent, beautiful and full of hope. Our world needs more evidence of this kind of purity of spirit.
